Family Life and Times

 

The 19th century was a strange blend of savage life on the prairie and social enhancements that brought culture and dreams of an easier life. Did these changes bring a better life? Maybe not but it is progress.. and without progress you die....

The men had to go out for days at a time in 1874 to prepare the land or move the livestock.
1895 shows the typical extended family including aunts, uncles, all sharing one home until each family could make it on their own.
The year is 1900 and it is cherry picking time. Notice the child in the baby stroller? Everyone is busy gathering the harvest.
Music was a common form of entertainment as the family spent a quiet evening singing.
School was a central cultural event.

EVENTS THAT CHANGED FAMILY LIFE

 

1825 - Kappa Alpha, the first fraternity is formed at Union College in NY.


1829 - The first U.S. encyclopedia, the Encyclopedia Americana is begun


1841 - Horace Greeley founds the New York Tribune newspaper


1850 - The first issue of Harper's magazine is published


1851 - Henry Raymond & George Jones found the New York Times


1851 - The first college sorority is established at Wesleyan College in Georgia


1861 - The United States introduces the first national income tax


1866 - The James Gang, Americas first organized robbery gang held up its first bank in Liberty, Missouri.


1883 - Cyrus Curtis publishes the Lady's Home Journal magazine


1888 - The National Geographic Magazine is published for the first time


1892 - The San Francisco Examiner prints the first comic strip


1897 The national Congress of Mothers became the first national PTA.
