Oscar Edmund "Cap"
Garland. Cap Garland was born in Wisconsin in 1864. He moved with
his mother and sisters to the De Smet area in 1880 and became known
in the "Little House" books for making his the trip south of De Smet
in "The Long Winter" for wheat.
Laura's revival and
school mate, Nellie Owens. Laura renamed her Nellie Oleson in the
"Little House" books.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed
Sandford. Mary Powers, one of Laura's friends and classmates,
married a banker, Ed Sandford. They lived across the street from Ma
and Pa's Third street home until the early 1900s when Mary and her
husband moved to Bellingham, Washington.
Rose Wilder Lane,
daughter of Laura and Almanzo Wilder. Rose inspired Laura to write
the "Little House" books. Rose wrote a pioneer book of her own
"Young Pioneers" which was made into a TV movie in the late 70's.
