The Long Winter Reviews
This
book continues the adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family
as they struggle through a difficult winter. Laura, Pa, Ma, her
blind older sister Mary and her two younger sisters, Carrie and
Grace, are living in a log cabin in Dakota territory. Laura works
side by side with Pa stacking hay and helping out around the farm.
Laura and Pa share a special father/daughter relationship. Pa relies heavily on Laura and calls her Half Pint. When an early frost hits in September, Pa becomes alarmed about what the winter months may bring. Trouble occurs in October when a blizzard hits the Dakota territories.
For four long days the blizzard rages, during which the Ingalls family is forced to make do with the food, wood and water they had in their possession before the unexpected storm hit. When an Indian makes a prediction that this winter's snow will be the worst in seven years, Pa Ingalls decides to move the family to town for the winter to keep them safe.
Although the Ingalls family moves to town they are
not out of danger because when the snow arrives it continues without
stopping until April with freezing temperatures. When trains are
unable to deliver food and coal to the townspeople, starvation is a
major worry. The Ingalls family must use all their resources in order
to survive the never-ending winter.
