Just wondering.................01-22-2009 6:48:50 pm
When and why does Mr. Edwards,Grace and the kids first leave the series? And how does Mr. Garvey end up in Walnut Grove? I do realise that Mr. Garvey is in the show to take over as Charles's 'best friend', and that it happens at the end of season 3, but I must have missed it somewhere along the line! (Which is not like me at all!) LOL! Thanks to anyone that can help!

Hi Michelle, and welcome to PT!

You haven’t missed anything. In 1977, Victor French left LHOP to star in Carter Country. His departure, along with his family is never addressed at the beginning of Season 4. They simply vanish from Walnut Grove. Carter Country was eventually cancelled and Victor returned to the show in Season 6, but without his family.

I dont know the answer to your question but i also have another one.

Why if it is called Walnut Grove, did i never see or hear of someone that is a walnut farmer? Usually when any town was named after a type of food back then, it was abundant in the area...

I wish it had been explained too, as at the end of Season 4 the Edwards family just disappears into the Twilight Zone. This is one thing I think could have been handled better instead of just the change over from Edwards to Garvey family, like we wouldn't notice

It would only have taken a brief explaintion or someone mentioning that maybe the Edwards family had decided to move on and not return to Walnut Grove, rather than just disappear. What makes it worse is the Garveys live in the Edwards house which is the old Sanderson place (like we do not notice this). It could have been easily explained he bought it from Edwards instead of just having him suddenly live there and be Charle's buddy.

Lots of time areas are named after trees, bushes or hills that are in the area in rural American areas. Where I live, which used to be small communities only marked by maybe a small General Store at one time, Church and a post office is Hill Grove. I assume that walnuts like here, were very prevalent there and that is why Mr Hanson (who really did exist) named it Walnut Grove.

Hello, and thanks for the welcome! I'm one of the biggest fans of LHOTP ever!! I'm glad to hear that I didn't miss anything about Mr Edwards leaving. (I must admit though, that I had a huge crush on Merlin Olsen (Mr Garvey)anyone else??) To answer the question about the name Walnut Grove, the answer in on season 9 episode 3 "Welcome To Olsenville" When they have the election for mayor, Lem MaCarry states that Jess Moffit named the town for the walnut trees that grew up on the hill.

No Michelle I didn't have a crush on Merlin Olson but I think you can pretty much guess where my heart did lie.

You guys are right, there is no explanation given in the show as to why the Edwards family doesn't appear anymore after season 3. I guess they thought the Garveys could sort of fill-in the place by being the Ingalls friends, and Andy could be a friend to Laura, Jonathan to Charles, and Alice to Caroline, etc.

In real life, Victor French (who played Mr. Edwards), wanted to work on a show of his own, called "Carter Country". He left "Little House" to do that, so the rest of the family had to be written out as well. This supposedly caused some friction between Michael Landon and Victor French, but they patched things up and Mr. Edward's family appears a few more times (although not the original casted actors), and he himself comes back in an episode in season 6, and begins to appear regularly again in season 8, and is in many of the episodes in season 9.

Yes, I have to admit I had a crush on Merlin Olsen and I still really like him in the series a lot...

Since I was an adult when the series aired, I naturally did not have any attraction for the boys in the series like some of you younger fans

Hello,
In the episodes "Times of change", when Mary and Charles travel to Chicago, there is a scene where Charles, Mary, John Jr and his boss are chatting, while dining at the restaurant.
And Charles asks John Jr what he will do after his studies... if he "will go to California to visit his parents"... (if I remember well, this entire scene is cut from the dvd... )
So... We can conclude that the Edwards traveled a long way... And then they must have came back nearer Minnesota because obviously, in "the return of Mr Edwards", Charles and Laura don't travel as far as California...!!!

Sometimes the screenwriters were not very interested with logic...
