She went blind in real life from scarlet fever I believe. The real life Mary Ingalls never did regain her sight. But it sounds like she had a good attitude about it and still did a lot of activities that a sighted person does. Such as play organ for church, teach sunday school and make some kind of horse blankets (or some thing like that) to help the family income. She sounded like a very sweet person.

Mary suffered from scarldt fever during her teen years. The fever settled in her eyes and caused her blindness.

In the main fan forum when you click laura ingalls wilder.It says she lost her sight to a stroke.
