HOME REMEDIES12-13-2005 10:01:28 pm
FOR ARTHRITIS:
golden raisins and gin
empty the raisins into a bowl and pour in just enough gin to cover the raisins. Allow the gin to evaporate (about 1 week) and place the moist raisins in a jar with a lid. Eat few a day will ease the arthritis.

SWEATY PALMS AND SOLES:
Boil 5 tea bags in a quart of water for 5 minutes. When the solution cools, soak your hands (or feet) for 20-30 minutes nightly. Tea contains tannic acid, which is also found in a lot of commercial products such Ivy Dry and Zilactin.

CUTS:
Pour some black pepper on cuts, it stops the bleeding quickly and the wound heals cleanly with little scarring.

DIARRHEA:
Archway Coconut Macaroon cookies help control the diarrhea better than medicine.

STINGS:
Mix one quart of a teaspoonful of meat tenderizer with a teaspoon of water to make a paste, smear it on the sting relieves the pain. Meat tenderizer also works with vinegar.
Vinegar also works well on stings from sunburns.

ITCHY:
For moderate itching (like mosquito bites) often respons to a hot water application. Water should be hot enough to be slightly uncomfortable but not so hot it burns. Rinse it for a few seconds should relief for several hours.

If anyone has any home remedies, please post them here, I'm one of those people would prefer home remedies than western medicines. Thank you!

Well, I love aromatherapy. So, when I really need to relax or I can't sleep, I take a warm bath and add about 8 drops of lavender essential oil to the water! Add some candles, soft music and a little wine...calmness in no time!!

Cholicy Babies

If you got a young'un whose cholicky, you can try putting him in a car seat and put him on top of your dryer and turn it on. The vibration seems to ease it.

Ruby, I'm a little young for arthritis, but I think I'll make that remedy anyway. That way, if the wife comes home and asks if I'm drunk, I can honestly say that I was only eating raisins!

As for the diaherrea remedy, that'll be the first time I ate something to STOP it, although I eat a whole lot of stuff that CAUSES it!

Now why do I think that arthritis remedy will get your attention?! Ahhh the gin! Well I'm a little young too for arthritis, but it works for my mom, oh she's always got pain here and there, she'll kid around and say Arthur Ritis takes her from joint to joint! But I gotta admit the gin raisin taste pretty good. And yes, I think this will be the first time you can actually tell your wife the TRUTH.

I have a whole book on remedies that my Grandma wrote. She had some books published and was supposed to have gone on the David Letterman show to promote it, but ended up getting sick with cancer and could not make the taping of the show. Her kids had sent the Letterman show her book, and David 'bout fell in the floor from reading it. It is called, "You've Got to Be Kidding Mother!" I will have to bring it to work with me and put some of the home remedies from it on here......My boys have gone through it when they feel the need for one and all I hear while they are reading it is, "eeeewwwwwwww, you've got to be kidding!" LOL

AMAZING! SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES

1. If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat and presto! The blockage will be almost instantly removed.

2. Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.

3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet seat by simply using the sink.

4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.

5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you will be afraid to cough.

7. Have a bad toothache? Smash your thumb with a hammer and you will forget all about the toothache.

8. Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are: You only need two tools - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

9. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

10. Never pass up an opportunity to go to the bathroom.

FOR RELIEF OF ASTHMA, BRONCHITIS AND OTHER RESPIRATORY AILMENTS

Honey is an outstanding household remedy that can be used in combination with various medicinal herbs. For relief of coughs and wheezing associated with bronchitis, whooping cough or other minor respiratory ailments, mix 1 tsp. of finely chopped fresh thyme in a little honey. Take the mixture orally as needed to soothe inflammed lungs and airways.

Also if you have a bad sliver. Make a paste up of sugar and water. Put the paste on a band aid and put it on the sliver. The sliver works its way out way faster this way.

Martha Stewart VS. Maxine

Martha Stewart - Don't throw out all that leftover wine. Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.
Maxine - Leftover wine?? Hello!!

Martha Stewart - Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.
Maxine - Take a lime, mix it with tequila, chill and drink. You might still have the headache, but who the hell cares!

Martha Stewart - Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips.
Maxine - Just suck the ice cream out of the bottom of the cone, for Pete's sake. You are probably lying on your butt on the couch, with your feet up anyway.

Martha Stewart - To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.
Maxine - Buy boxed mashed potato mix and you don't have to worry about the potatoes growing arms and legs.

Martha Stewart - When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won't be any white powdery mess on the bottom of the cake.
Maxine - Go to the bakery - they'll even decorate the ###### for you.

Martha Stewart - Brush some beaten egg white over pie crust before baking to yield a beautiful glossy finish.
Maxine - Sara Lee frozen pie directions do not include brushing egg whites, so don't do it.

Martha Stewart - If you have a problem opening jars, try using latex dishwashing gloves. They give a non slip grip that makes opening jars easy.
Maxine - Go ask the very HOT neighbour guy to do it.

Martha Stewart - If you accidentally over salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a peeled potato and it will absorb the excess salt for an instant "fix-me-up".
Maxine - If you over-salt a dish while you are cooking, that's too bad. Please recite with me the real woman's motto: "I made it and you will eat it and I don't care how bad it tastes!"

Martha Stewart - Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.
Maxine - Celery? Never heard of it

Missy my sister n law sent me that list. I'd have to look in the jell-o.

I did find this to helped my husband.

Take a tea bath. If your problem is excess sweating, soak your feet in a bucket of strongly brewed black tea, says Dr. Pedowitz. The tannic acid in the tea will kill the bacteria and close down your pores, keeping your feet dry longer. Use two tea bags per pint of water and boil for 15 minutes. Then remove the bags and add two quarts of water to the tea. Soak your feet for 30 minutes daily for about a week.

Apply some powder. Dust your feet with baby or foot powder. The powder will absorb some of the sweat

Buy absorbent socks. Thick, soft socks will soak up the sweat, keeping it away from your skin. Stay away from nylon, which doesn?t breathe or absorb moisture but does pick up odor fast

Throw out those stinking shoes. No matter what you do to make your feet smell better, if you shove them back inside a pair of smelly shoes, they?ll stink all over again. If you have smelly shoes, get rid of them and treat yourself to a new pair

I hope some of this helps.

This is what has worked for me with stinky feet. When I was a kid, my Pop was DEATH on smelly feet...it wasn't allowed..period. This is what he did..(and I do now, if I think it's coming on)

1. Soak your feet in hot bleach water (as hot as you can stand it, for as long as you can stand it)
2. Wipe your feet dry with a clean, dry towel.
You've just cured the stink...now, to keep it from coming back..
1. Never wear socks 2 days in a row...smell tests don't work.
2. Never..EVER wear a shoe without socks. (except flip-flops or sandals..that's ok..a shoe where your feet get air)Also, for women, don't wear shoes without a good pair of hose..it absorbs the sweat.
3. If you have a toenail that is turning ingrown, it will make your feet stink, and you'll have to have it surgically removed. (I've had it done..it doesn't hurt, but it's hard to walk for a couple of days)
4. If you've had a problem, but can't afford new shoes at the moment, buy a can of Lysol or other disinfectant. Spray the inside of your shoes every night.
5. A lot of people neglect their feet when they shower, so what you do is, just take a wet cloth and clean between your toes after you take a shower.

I'm 36 years old, and have wore every kind of shoe they make for a man, and I've got a pair of boots that are about..oh..8 years old, and you won't smell nothing in them but old leather..in fact..the last time I remember having a stinky foot was when I was about 7 years old (when I learned all these rules!)
If you've got teenagers, or young children...this really comes in handy! I can't STAND stinky feet! lol

Men instead of trying to
get the gal liquored up ,
try to get her licoriced
up. Licorice is a natural
aphordiousact for women.

But it's not for her to eat
you eat it put it in your
pockets , and any where else
you can think of for it's the
smell not taste of it that will
drive her made.......

These are pretty good tips!!!

==============================

A sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed. (hmmmmmm...)
============================================
Use Empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.
=================================================
For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put Dawn dishwashing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze. (wish I had known this for the last 40 years!)
=================================================
To remove old wax from a glass candle holder, put it in the freezer for a few hours.
Then take the candle holder out and turn it upside down. The wax will fall out.
=================================================
Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped in baking soda. Comes off with little eff! ort (elb ow grease that is!).
=================================================
Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt BLUE!) rubbing alcohol on paper towel.
=================================================
Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S Pads, I immediately take a pair of scissors and cut each pad into halves. After years of having to throw away rusted and unused and smelly pads, I finally decided that this would be much more economical. And now a box of S.O.S pads last me indefinitely! In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get sharpened this way!
=================================================
Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little hydrogen peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works every time! Now, where to put the body? LOL
=================================================
Use vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks. Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don't wash windows on a sun ny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak.
=================================================
Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on. DO NOT put perfume on a light bulb while it is on or hot!
=================================================
Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linens.
================================================
Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning.
================================================
To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm!
=================================================
To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stovetop.
================================================
Spray your TUPPERWARE with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains.
================================================
Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.
================================================
When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness.
================================================
Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.

These are great everybody and I really need some of them too!

And If your mouth is still stiff and numb for a long time after you get a tooth filled find something that makes you scream. It worked for me when I screamed because a set of shelves fell off my wall and it surprised me. And that problem was gone.

Say, those are some good tips! I especially like the one about celery. I like to buy celery just to eat with peanut butter, but it goes bad so fast, it ain't worth the money...maybe I can start again!
I've got one of those vacuum seal thingies, but I hate to drag it out just for celery, and besides, onece you "un-seal" it, you have to make a new one, and that gets old after a while!

Bounce This Along

My mail carrier told me that the US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away. Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer.

1.All this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer! It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.

2.Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers,or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

3.It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.

WATER OR COKE?

This is really an eye opener...Water or Coke? We all know that water is important but, I've never seen it expressed like this before.

WATER

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and < BR>> joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less
likely to develop bladder cancer.

And now for the properties of COKE:

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove
blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4days. Phosphoric acid also bleaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors o f coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a Coke or a glass of water?

Now Now Lily, you forgot to Snopes it! That exact same post (about coke) is on Snopes.com...and here is their solution to the urban legend...

Many
of the entries above are just simple household tips involving Coca-Cola, as provided by Joey Green in his 1995 book Polish Your Furniture with Panty Hose and on his web site. That you can cook and clean with Coke is relatively meaningless from a safety standpoint — you can use a wide array of common household substances (including water) for the same purposes; that fact alone doesn't necessarily make them dangerous to ingest. Nearly all carbonated soft drinks contain carbonic acid, which is moderately useful for tasks such as removing stains and dissolving rust deposits (although plain soda water is much better for some of these purposes than Coca-Cola or other soft drinks, as it doesn't leave a sticky sugar residue behind). Carbonic acid is relatively weak, however, and people have been drinking carbonated water for many years with no detrimental effects.

The rest of the claims offered here are specious. Coca-Cola does contain small amounts of citric acid and phosphoric acid; however, all the insinuations about the dangers these acids might pose to people who drink Coca-Cola ignore a simple concept familiar to any first-year chemistry student: concentration. Coca-Cola contains less citric acid than orange juice does, and the concentration of phosphoric acid in Coke is far too small (a mere 11 to 13 grams per gallon of syrup, or about 0.20 to 0.30 per cent of the total formula) to dissolve a steak, a tooth, or a nail overnight. (Much of the item will dissolve eventually, but after a day or two you'll still have most of the tooth, a whole nail, and one very soggy t-bone.)

Besides, the gastric acid in your stomach is much stronger than any of the acids in Coca-Cola, so the Coca-Cola is harmless.

The next time you're stopped by a highway patrolman, try asking him if he's ever scrubbed blood stains off a highway with Coca-Cola (or anything else). If you're lucky, by the time he stops laughing he'll have forgotten about the citation he was going to give you.

Don't feel bad...I've done the same thing so many times I'm embarrassed to admit it! I knew the thing about trucks hauling the syrup was bogus, because I used to haul it, and I never had to use a Haz-mat placard.
Still a pretty good urban legend though....

Wow Larry thanks for the info, I actually didn't get it from Snopes.com, I received it from my email from a friend and she got it from a friend and so on, well you know how the forwarding mail goes, I did not know that some were bogus, maybe I should delete it.

lol...I know Lily, that's where I've gotten all mine. Sometime back, someone e-mailed something about calling this 1-800 number to put your cell phone on the "no call list"...I did it. Then, I came here, and told someone about it, and that's when I found out about Snopes......I had just given my cell phone number to some completely bogus outfit!
That Snopes is pretty good about keeping up to date on the new scams and legends, along with a lot of the old ones.
So if you ever feel silly about someting you've done...think of me...because I gaurantee whatever lame thing you think you might have done, I've done worse!

Lavender essential oil helps induce sleep and calmness. I use this quite a bit myself actually. It IS very calming...hasn't really done much in way of sleep but it definitely promotes calmness and well being.

Ok, this is a really bizarre cure for a hangover that I heard, here goes: rub lemon slices under each armpit. I don't know, I've been told this works. Can anyone confirm??

Here are other, less bizarre home remedies. lol

Some helpful hints on getting rid of a headache
Dip a handkerchief in white vinegar and wrap it around your head. Now, I use this one myself, but sometimes I just eliminate the white vinegar and just use the handkerchief tied around my head.
Try acupressure, try rubbing the space between your index finger and your thumb, this can work sometimes.
Taking your aspirin with coffee can really make the aspirin more effective...it makes it work faster and better

Christina,

Not that I am proud of this....but I am quite sure there is not cure for a hangover. Back in my crazier days I truly tried everything including the lemon under my arms and I still felt like sh......ouldnt I just say it didnt work? lol Maybe it just didnt work for me because of other anonymous reasons? lol

You bring up a good remedy anyway. Lemon is good at fighting odor. Thats why you see all the lemon scented cleaning products. I doubt many of the people here have this problem but if your deodorant ever stop working for whatever reason....just rub some lemon wedges or juice under your arms for a temporary fix.

You can scrub things such as spray paint off of your hands with a pedicure pumice stone they are usually just a few dollars if you buy it seperate from a pedicure kit.
