| same here!!! Did you know that jack really never followed them to minnesota or silver lake? He actually either died in kansas when laura was 3 or went with pet and patty because the ingalls got a new dog (Wolf) who tore up laura's mittens in the big woods it was in a book i read.

| To me the saddest part of all the books happened in "The First Four Years" when Laura's nameless baby boy died then not long after they lost their home in a fire. Garth Williams drew a desperate and hopeless looking Laura with her hair in disarray clutching to Almanzo with little Rose looking on.

| Though Laura didn't really describe the process of Mary going blind in her books. In "On the Banks of Plum Creek" she was fine but then she was already blind in the opening of "By the Shores of Silver Lake".

| The very end of These Happy Golden Years makes me cry. It's the part where Pa tells Almanzo that he'll help Laura into the buggy or wagon (whatever) one more time.....he tells Almanzo that he (Almanzo) will do it forever after that......but this is Pa's last time.......

| I agree that all these scenes are sad. "The First Four Years" has such a different feel to it than the rest of the books because Laura's optimism seems to wane in this one. It's frightening how much they had to deal with in the first few years of their marriage.

| When a book can make you cry it's a well written book. I would have to agree "the First Four Years" is the one I tear up on. So much hardship for a young couple.

| I don't often cry when reading books - call me a hard, old, so and so - but I do get emotional at times.
I felt really teary at the end of "These Happy Golden Years" when Laura left home after getting married. It was just beautiful and that book is by far my favourite in the series that I have read.
I found parts of the First Four Years sad - especially when everything seemed to go bad at once...from the bad crops, the fire, the baby's death, the diptheria, the stroke - it was difficult for me to reconstruct in my mind how horrible it must have been to deal with all that in such a short period.
It almost seemed too terrible to seem real for me - so my emotions were somehow cut off when reading it.

| The end of "These Happy Golden Years" is very sad because its like the end of an era for all the other books. I mean Laura living with her ma and pa and her sisters, its like everything changes. The begining of Little House on Rocky Ridge is sad for the same reason only the sadness is more intense because you know it will be a long long time before Laura sees her ma and pa and sisters again.
I have not read "The First Four Years" yet I sould try to read that over break inbetween spring and summer classes.

| Definitely the end of THGY and I can barely read TFFY. As a child, I hated that book. Now as an adult, I just feel so sad for all the hardships they were dealt.
