Mary Ingalls on her Own12-23-2008 2:29:45 pm
My Grandparents have recently given me the book Mary Ingalls on Her Own by Elizabeth Kimmel Willard for Christmas. It's about how the real Mary Ingalls first started The College for the Blind in Vinton Iowa. I started reading it yesterday and right now i'm on page 50 and it's amazing.

I have this book too. It IS AMAZING! I couldnt put it down. i think it really shows you what Mary went through. And though the little house books are the best Mary is often in the backround. This book puts her in the spotlight. All my little house books are on my christmas list so i have to wait TWO MORE DAYS! Happy Reading
Katie

I have alot of time to read. we got out of school for vacation on the 19th of December but school was cancelled that day because of all the snow Iowa got. I don't have to go back until January 5th.

This book sounds excellent. I love adding new ones to my collection. Hopefully I will be able to find it on Amazon!!

Does anyone have any information on how accurate this story is, especially given that it was not written by LIW? Does anyone know how much historical research has taken place - and how much is the authors imagination? I'd be really interested to hear what people know/think on this. Thanks!!

I haven't read this one yet, but Marilyn who wrote the review for this one at my blog said this, "While we don't know exactly what happened while Mary attended the college, this book was based on courses and life happenings taken from the school's archives." She also mentions that some of the people mentioned in the book were actual people, so it seems some effort was taken to make it historically accurate even though it is fiction.

I purchased this book from the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in De Smet, SD last summer and I did finally got around to reading it. It's hard to believe, but most people come home from holidays with t-shirts and other similar souvenirs. Me? I came home with almost a car-trunk load of books! The annoying staff at the airport even charged me excess luggage!! As I said to my husband, obtaining these books was practically ESSENTIAL - especially since Amazon charge so much for postage. Luckily for me, the excess baggage charge was only a fraction of what it would cost me to purchase these from Amazon. Sorry - I digress!!

I really enjoyed MIOHO. It was a light, easy read and just the ticket after a long day at work. It also provided some insights into what life may have been like for Mary at college. I am not a fan of the spin-off series. I don't own them, nor do I intend to - but this title, for some unknown reason intrigued me and didn't disappoint.

I wanted to own this one too. I think part of the appeal for me is that not a lot is written about that time in Mary's life. I bought this book, but I haven't read it yet.

I did get a chance to read this book, maybe a month ago. I enjoyed getting a peek at what Mary's life at school could have been like. I think it seemed true to the Mary from the earlier books, but I had a hard time reconciling Mary from MIOHO and Mary from LTOTP or THGY when she comes home for a visit. But I guess it would be expected that she would have grown and matured quite a bit while away at school.

I enjoyed it more than Nellie Oleson meets Laura Ingalls! That book fell very flat for me. I'm hoping when Farmer Boy Goes West comes out next year, it will be good!

It is releasing in Feb. Amazon has a picture up on their site now. I'm assuming it is about the Wilders' move from NY to Minnesota; Almanzo looks like a young teen in the picture. I'm excited to read a little about Almanzo's years that aren't written about in the original Little House series.
