| Welcome to the Prairie Tami. The Olsen family moved from Walnut Grove to De Smet where Laura and Almanzo met. You are right for the rest of your post.

| Actually, the way the TV show portrayed it is very much the opposite of the books! In the books, Laura didn't have a crush on Almanzo at all; she barely noticed him. (She noticed his beautiful horses, Prince and Lady, more than Almanzo!) He noticed her first, and he began doing things like walking her home from evening church meetings, and she says in the book that she couldn't figure out why he was paying attention to her because "he was so much older, he was a homesteader, and he was Pa's friend more than hers."
When he began picking her up at Brewster School and bringing her home for the weekend, she actually worried that he wanted to be her beau (imagine the TV Laura worrying over that!) and told him she didn't intend to go with him anymore after she was home to stay. And when someone told her, "An old bachelor doesn't pay so much attention to a girl unless he's serious. You will marry him yet," Laura's reply was, "Oh no indeed, I wouldn't leave home to marry anybody!"
On the TV show, Pa disapproved of Laura's interest in Almanzo, and Ma was tickled by it. In the book, it was Ma who seemed concerned, and Pa who was pleased because he liked Almanzo. (Ma was worried about Almanzo walking Laura home from church because "she's only 15!")
But "These Happy Golden Years" is my favorite of the books because it shows how Almanzo got Laura to notice him and how they fell in love. It's such a sweet book, I really love it!

| If you plan to read the books it might be a good idea to discuss them with others who are reading them at the same time. Some of us belong to a site where we are reading and talking together about book 1, Little House in the Big Woods. If you are interested go to http://p2.forumforfree.com/lhotp.html and join us.
