Little House on the Prairie
California Ch. 1
Based on Season 4
Charles pulled up in his wagon as Caroline and the girls were doing chores around the farm.
"Caroline!" called Charles
"Yes, Charles what is it?" asked Caroline
"Remember how Lucas Douglass was sick so I represented Walnut Grove in the Grange convention in Chicago?" said Charles.
"Yes, of course I do." said Caroline cheerfully.
"Well once again since he moved outta town who'll be representing again?" hinted Charles.
"Oh Charles I'm so happy, oh, the grange again!" Caroline exclaimed.
"And there's another thing, the convention is in California...So I'll be able to see the ocean!" stated Charles.
"...Oh...I suppose u'll be away a long time...months..." sighed Caroline in a dissapointed tone as she turned arundto walk into the house to console herself.
"Caroline, wait a minute!" said Charles.
Caroline turned around to respond. "It's all right, Charles. I understand you can't turn an oppertunity like this away."
"No that isn't it I want you and the girls to come with me. I couldn't go away frm ya that long. If I go to California alone a month into the trip I'd turn around and head back 2 Walnut Grove. I'd miss ya so much." said Charles.
"But what about the girls' schooling...I suppose I could teach them, there will be schools in California...All right then, let's tell the girls at supper!" exclaimed Caroline.
"Okay then, we'll leave Monday!" Charles said. Then they walked inside and Carolin began to prepare supper.
"Girls, it's time for supper!" shouted Caroline out the door.
"Coming Ma!" Mary replied as they all came in for supper.
" Half-Pint close the door." laughed Charles.
"Hey, Pa could I go fidhin' after supper? I'm done all my chores!" pleaded Laura.
"We'll see. One thing at a time and you still have to finish your homework." Charles responded.
"I'm all done mine." Mary boasted.
"Yeah, but you never wanna go fishin' you just keep your nose in a book anyways what difference does it make." Laura snarled.
"Your father has something more exciting than fishing to tell you." said Caroline as the Ingalls family devoured their meal.
"What could be more exciting than fishin'!" Laura exclaimed.
"Just about anything..." Mary muttered. Laura stuck her tounge out and Mary reacted with the same in return.
"What is it papa!" exclaimed Carrie in an unclear voice.
"I've been chosen to represent the Grange again. so we're all gonna take a free train ride courtesy of the Grange to California!" Explained Charles as the girls sat on the edge of their seats with anticipation waiting for their Pa to finish his last sentence about there next adventure.
Ch.2
"California, not another gold rush?" whined Laura. "You remember what happened last time?" Laura continued to moan.
"No, half-pint, I'm all done with gold for good I learned my lesson the first time." stated Charles.
"Just because we're going to California it doesn't necessarily mean we're going on a gold rush. There's more to the state than that." explained Caroline.
"They've got an ocean too the pacific to be specific. I've never seen an ocean before Thank you Pa!" Mary shouted with gratitude.
"It'll be a whole new adventure just like when we left the big woods and Kansas! I've heard so many stories about the ocean but ti see an honest to goodness sea! Oh Pa thank you so much!" Laura exclaimed.
"Can we play on the beach Papa?" muttered Carrie.
"You bet we can darlin'!" Charles replied t his youngest daughter. Then the family gobbled up their supper. The next day was a Friday and Mary, Laura and Carrie were in a hurry to rush off to school.
"I can't believe we're actually going to California!" Laura cheered.
"I know it'll be so fascinating." said Mary.
"Not to mention we get to ride a train and the Grange is gonna pay for everything from the food to our hotel fee!" Laura stated with enthusiasm
"That's right. Pa said the Grange is going to cover all the expenses. I'm surprised Pa decided to go he got awful mad at the Grange in Chicago for taking advantage of the farmers." Mary said.
"I still don't know what a grange is?" Carrie mumbled in an almost uncomprehegsive voice. When the girls arrived at school, coincidentally the history topic was the California forty-niners. As Miss. Beadle explained the historical event Laura raised her hand to share new news.
"Yes, Laura." Miss Beadle said as she called on Laura.
"My pa is taking us to California for 3 whole months because he's representing the Grange this year." Laura boasted.
"That's very nice, Laura, keep up on your studies while your away and have a nice trip. When do you leave? I want to give you a few assignments so you won't fall behind." Miss Beadle responded.
"Oh...you're giving us homework...We ugh, leave Monday." Laura moaned, disappointed that her bragging had come back to bite her.
"I'll give you you're assignments after class, okay?" said Miss Beadle. When it was recess time Nellie Oleson alongside with her bratty younger brother, Willie came up to the Ingalls girls.
"What's so great about smelly, salty, water anyways?" Nellie teased attempting to pick a fight, as usual.
"You'll never know." Mary remarked.
"Sounds like a plain old waste of time to me isn't that right, Willie?" Nellie snapped back.
"Yeah, a waste of time." Willie mocked as he followed his sister's lead.
"Well nobody asked you." Laura replied. "You're just jealous.
"Why would I be jealous of an awful trip to boredom." Nellie commented obnoxiously.
"Yeah, boring." Willie quoted as he scampered off to the outhouse.
"Well at least I won't have to see you for three months." Nellie snarled.
"That's right, Mary, won't it be great just think no Nellie Oleson for three entire months." Laura snickered
"Best part of the trip." Mary grinned. Then the bell rang and everyone hustled into the schoolhouse and before they knew it the sun was setting and class was dismissed and the Ingalls we're at the dinner table conversing.
"I can't believe the whole big list of homework Miss Beadle gave us." Laura complained.
"i think it was nice of her to write out your lessons so you won't fall behind she was even sure to add in a special segment on fractions because she knows you have difficulty with them." Caroline replied as Charles got ready to play his fiddle.
"Besides, Laura, it's your own fault you had to open your big mouth and try to show off." Mary piped in.
"What do you care you love school." Laura snapped.
"Girls that'll be enough. What has gotten into you two lately." ordered Charles as he began to play a melody on his violin.
"All right Carrie time for bed. You too girls after you finish up your homework." Caroline ordered as she tucked Carrie into bed as the fiddle continued softly harmonizing drifting Carrie silently into a deep sleep.
