| First of all, welcome. I have read many different opinions on Mr. Edwards, but the most popular one is that he represents all of the people who helped them in a time of need.
Nellie Oleson was also based on three different girls that Laura met. The first two were Nellie Owens and Ginny(Genevieve) Masters. They were in Walnut Grove and were the two 'leaders' of all of the little girls. They both tried to buy Laura to be on one of their sides, but was never able too... so Laura soon found herself as the leader of all of the little girls at school, Ginny and Nellie included! The third girl is Stella Gilbert. She was a very poor girl who lived near Almanzo(see the chapter Nellie Oleson in These Happy Golden Years), but she was very pretty. She tricked Almanzo into letting her go on a few buggy rides with him and Laura, but when he found out... she was not invited anymore.
Albert Ingalls as the adopted son is also fictional, however, there was a Cousin Albert. James and Cassandra Cooper are completely fictional, as are Nancy, Jenny, and the Carter family. Adam Kendall is also entirely fictional. I think that he was created only to give Mary more of a 'television' worthy story after she went blind. The real Mary Ingalls attended the college of the blind in Vinton, Iowa for six years before returning home to De Smet to live until she died. She never married and never had any children.
Nels and Harriet Oleson are more elaborated, of course, than the parents of Nellie Owens. Many other characters were more elaborated as well, Mr. Edwards being one of them.
Ages are also another matter, which you probably know, (I'm sorry... you only asked about characters, lol.) Carrie was only 3 years younger than Laura, not seven. They did, however, have the age gap between Carrie and Grace correct with seven years.
After all of this and the fact that they moved a lot more than was shown on the show, many people choose to disregard the show, but it is a thing in itself and should not be disregarded only for the fact that it is not completely factual. What television show or movie is?

| Eliza Jane Wilder was portrayed as Mr. Applewood in The Troublemaker.
The Carters and the Garveys were fictional.

| Any time Brenda! Even though Mr. Applewood was only in one episode, but the details of him were very similar to Eliza Jane in Laura's book. Ex: Eliza Jane was always under the notion that Laura was a troublemaker (a bit of jealousy in my opinion) because Charles was on the school board, so was Applewood. But to my understanding, Eliza Jane wasn't always rude and mean to Laura, later when Laura married Manly, Eliza Jane was very nice to her, I think she even babysat for them.

| It might be easier to tell who was in the books and the series.
-Christy and Sandy Kennedy were in the schoolhouse with the Ingalls girls in Walnut Grove and Miss Eva Beadle was the teacher.
-Rev Alden was pastor on the Walnut Grove Church.
-Mr Hanson was the owner of the dugout and property on Plum Creek. He sold it to the Ingalls for the horses Pet and Patty.
There may be others that I can't think of at the moment.

| -Miss Beadle was their teacher in Walnut Grove.
-Mr. and Mrs. Oleson(in the books) ran the Mercantile and their children Nellie and Willie attended the school with the girls.
Thanks for saying the others, there were so many I was just trying to cover the main ones, lol. Not that they aren't all important.

| They did mention Alice's name in the Christmas episode, but once again Almanzo's sister, Laura was not there. I know why Laura Ingalls Wilder didn't put her in the books, but I think it would have been nice to have seen a complete Wilder family when Almanzo told the story of the one Christmas he never forgot.

Oops I didn't mean Mr. Applewood was on the school board, I was trying to say that Eliza Jane thought Laura made all the trouble in the school and encouraged the boys to be unruly. In the episode The Troublmaker, Mr Applewood was having dinner with the Olesons, I remember Nellie planted a seed in Mr. Applewood's head that Laura was Miss Beadle's pet. Sorry about the confusion.
