Sherry's Walnut Grove Visit
Story and Photos By Sherry Soltis, Click images for larger view
My
visit to Walnut Grove was with a friend of mine. She has been a number of
times, this was my first visit. We started by posting Michaels picture on
the sign that said "Welcome to Walnut Grove."
We
then went and visited the museum that has a lot of things showing the TV
show. One of which is the actual mantle with the initials on it. It was
taken from the Little House before it was torn down and given to one of
the actors.

They also have a lot of pictures and a small miniature town and various articles of clothing from that time era.
As you go thru the museum, there are a lot of odds and ends, things you can buy, bonnets, outhouses, etc.
The museum itself is really not very large, but is packed full of good things to see. There are also quite a few pictures from the TV show.
The actual town is nothing like you
would expect. It's just another town, however they do have a diner called
Nellie's. We went to the post office to mail some postcards to ourselves
so they would have the Walnut Grove postmark on them.
There are some gift shops in town that you can buy things from, little things that say from the banks of Plum Creek, and little things that have dirt from the banks of Plum Creek. Many many little things, milk bottles that say Walnut Grove, that type of thing.
On the way out of town there is a sod
house that you can visit, you can actually spend the night in it, if your
booked way in advance, it is all sod, and is just like in that time era.
Quite interesting to go visit.
If you would like to visit the real Walnut Grove or buy things from the museum check out the towns website at www.walnutgrove.org

* Webmasters Note: The mantle Sherry describes and the gun featured in the pictures was presented to the Museum in Walnut Grove in 1997 from Cheryl Landon, daughter of Michael Landon.
